King Ludwig's Castle

Fact-file:

  • Location: Disney Village
  • Type of restaurant: Table Service
  • Cost: Approximately 36 euro for a set 3-course meal and a beer outside of happy hour.
  • Option to reserve a table: Yes
  • Character Dining: No.

Do you want to eat in the castle but are not willing to pay 75 euro a pop? King Ludwig is the place for you. Known for it's medieval atmosphere, great food and some of the cheapest alcoholic beverages in Disneyland Paris, it is a popular haunt for many a guest.

King Ludwig's Castle is actually made of 3 different elements. Firstly, as per Disney tradition, there is a shop. This contains a manor of weird and wonderful items and there is a surprisingly lack of Disney.

Secondly there is a small bar which can be very popular between 5 and 7. This is because King Ludwig's Castle is the only bar in Disneyland Paris that offers a happy hour, which could save you anything from 1-2.5 euro per drink. In addition, for the heavy beer drinkers amongst you, you can get a 1 metre yard of beer for 30 euro.

Last but no means least, the restaurant itself. King Ludwig's Castle specialises in German cuisine with a french twist. Think of foods like french onion soup, creme brulee, spatzle and you'll be on the right lines.

The restaurant itself looks exactly how I would imagine a royal banquet hall to look. Wooden tables and chairs are surrounded by some of the most imaginative decoration in Disneyland Paris. Tables regularly surround statues of daring nights, German chandeliers adorn the ceilings and all the walls are covered with art inspired by the medieval era. This, Rainforest Cafe and Cafe Mickey all share the honour of the best theming in Disney Village and Ludwig is the cheapest of the 3 without a meal plan.
Ever wanted to eat in a castle, thanks to the amazing creativity of the restaurant's designers, you can. Picture description: Family eating at a restaurant, to the families left , a statue of a knight and horse. Picture Source: Disneyland Paris

So what is the food like? I've personally never had any complaints when it comes to the savoury dishes. What makes this place stand out however, apart from the cheaper beverages, is their desserts. OMG. As a pudding fanatic, I can appreciate a good dessert and King Ludwig happens to be high on the 'best dessert' list. Their take on an apple strudel is freshly sliced apples on top of the crispiest filo pastry and then it's topped with the most fantastic caramel source. It is literally the stuff of royalty.

Overall King Ludwig's Castle is the perfect balance of value for money, great food and fantastic decoration. If you want to enjoy table service during your stay but don't have the meal vouchers, this is the option for you.

Final Score: 9.5/10
